INJECTION SAFETY

Objective
Coordination of Injection Safety (IS) activities to prevent HIV transmission through medical injections.

Overall Achievements in 2006:
NASCOP received Injection Safety funds for the first time in 2006. In the past year, several stakeholders meetings were held with participants from Ministry of Health departments including Nursing, Public Health, and Immunization. Implementing partners JSI- Making Medical Injections Safer (JSI-MMIS), World Health Organization, Kenya Medical Training College and University of Nairobi also attended.

Stakeholders were engaged to successfully come up with both a National Policy and Standards and Guidelines for Injection safety and Medical waste management. These documents were recently published and plans are ongoing for their dissemination. NASCOP has also been involved in monitoring of injection and waste disposal practices at health facilities and training sessions by JSI-MMIS.
The Ministry of Health has supported the program by deploying additional personnel including a public health officer and nurse.
