Sentinel Surveillance in antenatal clinics ANC clinics; have been conducted annually since 1990. Kenya is one of the few countries in the region, which has conducted sero-prevalence surveys in women attending antenatal clinics consistently for the last 17 years.
The objectives of the Sentinel Surveillance are-:
Monitor the trends of HIV and syphilis infection in pregnant women at sentinel sites

Estimate the burden of HIV infection in the general population nationally and the distribution by district and Province, in rural and urban population by age group and by educational and marital status.

Measure prevalence of HIV infection in Men and Women with sexually transmitted infections on a national level.

Compare and validate program data with sentinel surveillance at sites offering prevention of mother to child transmission services.

Disseminate and utilize the information provided by sentinel surveillance to advocate and plan for more effective services to prevent HIV infection and to care for those infected and to measure progress in achieving targets for National HIV /AIDS Strategic plan.
