- Prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS is at 7.8% according to KAIS 2007 compared to 6.7% in the 2003 KDHS
- Increase in the number of people declaring their sero-status
- Quality of knowledge on HIV transmission and prevention increased
- Significant increase in number of Kenyans tested for HIV and in number receiving ARVs (treatment)
- Today there are 213,000 patients receiving ART including children
- The ART Program has 345 sites currently, catered for by both the public and private sector per month to date
- Increase in condom consumption from 2 million per month in 2002 to 10 million per month to date
- All blood units at the regional blood centres are screened for HIV
- The number of voluntary counselling and testing centres (VCT) in the country has increased from 3 in 2000 to 920 VCT sites to date as of October 2007
- To date a cumulative 2,400,000 clients have been tested and the number of positives has been 400,000
- A total of 167 PMTCT sites were established in 2001. Today there are over 1750 sites.
- It is estimated that 60% of pregnant mothers visiting antenatal centers are now counselled and tested for HIV. Close to one million pregnant women have benefited from this service.
- Nutrition department in place to address issues of nutrition in managing patients on ART, infant feeding in the context of HIV/AIDS & maternal nutrition, Community nutrition during home based care and nutrition support for people living with HIV/AIDS in all life cycle stages.
- Development of training materials for ART,PMTCT, VCT, Lab, TB, Diagnostic Testing and Counseling is ongoing
- National guidelines for HBC, VCT, ART, PMCT, HIV Testing in Clinical Settings and Blood Safety have been developed and are re-evaluated periodically.
